Dental Hygiene

Prevention is better than cure

This proverb is known to everyone. It seems obvious, and yet usually we end up on the dental chair only after it starts to hurt. Regular dental hygiene and check-up visits allow to constantly monitor the condition of teeth and to start a treatment immediately at the beginning of the infection, as opposed to when the tooth itself painfully tells us that something is wrong with it. In short, the better we look after our own teeth, the longer they stay with us.

Despite these clear benefits, dental hygiene visits are still too often overlooked. Meanwhile, dental plaque and tartar build-up can lead to caries, periodontal disease and bad breath.

The easiest way to prevent oral diseases is regular dental hygiene appointment.Performed every six months as advised by the WHO (World Health Organization), will allow to enjoy a healthy and whiter smile for many years.

What is professional dental hygiene all about? It’s also known as deep cleaning and it is a procedure of removing dental plaque and calculus as well as stains or discolouration. At the Kownacki-Dent Dental Centre, the procedure is performed by a dentist or a qualified hygienist. The whole process consists of a couple of painless stages:

  • scalingis the removal of dental plaque and tartar using, in most cases, ultrasounds. The vibrations are breaking down the plaque, which is then rinsed with water,
  • sandblastingis the removal of deposits and discolouration. The procedure is performed using a special sandblaster that releases water under pressure along with special particles of cleaning substance,
  • polishingis a thorough polishing of the teeth’s surface and interdental spaces using a special paste and tools. As a result, tartar build-up is reduced,
  • Fluoride application is covering the teeth with fluoride varnish to strengthen the enamel and make it resistant to caries.

* Smokers, people wearing braces, implants or prosthetics, as well as people prone to tartar build-up, should have the full procedure performed more often. In such individual cases, we encourage you to contact our doctors.
